BEIJING

Capital of China

 

Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and located in the north tip of the Hebei Province (North China). Beijing covers a total area of 16,807.8 square kilometers. Beijing has 13.5 millions population. The annual temperature averages 12c.  The city has discovered 67 minerals including coal, iron, copper, tungsten, lead, zinc, nickel, gold, molybdenum, limestone, marble and granite. Beijing is a historic and cultural city.

 

Economic Development   Beijing’s GDP (1999) reached 175.5 billion RMB. The proportion of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries accounted for 5.7%, 42% and 51%, respectively, of the city GDP.

 

Primary industry includes cultivation and breeding,

 

Secondary industry covers metallurgy, chemicals, building materials, automobile, electronics, machinery equipment, light industry, textiles, medicine and other traditional sectors, high-tech industries sectors of electronic information, bio-engineering, new medicine, the optical-mechanical-electrical integration and new materials.

 

Tertiary industry consists of commercial services, transportation, telecommunications, tourism, banking and insurance, real estate business, technical service, and commerce & legal affairs consulting service.

 

Transportation and Telecommunications The city has formed a highway communication network with second, third and fourth round-the city roads, the Beijing - Tianjin - Tanggu expressway, the expressway leading to the Capital airport, and the new railway system also has formed with the Beijing Railway Station and the Beijing West Station as hubs. Beijing’s subways have a total length of 42 kilometers. Beijing succeeded in upgrading telephone numbers to eight digits thus the city telephone exchange capacity raise to closing 5 million lines. Inland airlines from Beijing to all provinces, autonomous regions are convenient. The international airlines reach more than 50 major world’s cities.

 

Opening to outside world   Beijing has made sustained and rapid progress in opening to the outside world. The city approved over 900 foreign funded enterprises involving contractual investment reached of 3.5 billion US dollars. Beijing has encouraged foreign investors to make an investment in high-tech industry, infrastructure facilities, residential quarters as well as in high-value and export-oriented industrial and agricultural projects.

 

Industrial Development Zones  Beijing industrial development zones consists of Beijing New Technology Industrial Development Pilot Zone and the Beijing Economic and Technology Development Zone as well as other 29 industrial parks; all Beijing’s development zones are provided with complete infrastructure such water, electricity, gas, heat, transport, postal, and telecommunication facilities providing and welcome for overseas investors to make an investment.

     
    THE GREAT WALL

A symbol of the ancient Chinese civilization Construction of the Wall began in the 7th century B.C. Known as one of the great wonders of the world, it starts from the Yalu River in the east, and ends at Jiayuguan in the west, stretching 6,350 kilometers. Badaing in Beijing is the best preserved and most imposing section of the Wall. The magnitude and beauty of the Wall can been seen at Jinshaning. Mutianyu, and Simatai.

       
    THE TEMPLE OF HEAVEN

The largest temple complex in China. It served as the place where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties would pray to heaven for good harvests.  It consists of the Hall of Prayer, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Circular Mound Altar, and the Echo Wall.

       
    THE SUMMER PALACE

One of the largest royal gardens in China, covering an area of 297 hectares. Originally a summer resort of the Qing court, it consists of the Kunming Lake and the Longevity Hill, as well as a Long Corridor, the Pavilion of the Fragrance of Buddha, the Garden of harmonious Interest, a Stone Boat, the Seventeen-arch Bridge, and the Bronze Ox.

 

       
    THE PALACE MUSEUM

was knows as the Forbidden City, lies in the heart of Beijing. It is the largest and the best preserved palace building complex in the world. Occupying an area of 72 hectares. It was built between 1406 and 1420, and served as the imperial palace for the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has 9,000 halls and rooms, containing many precious relics.
