Chongqing (Central Municipality)
Chongqing is situated in the Three Gorges reservoir area in
the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Chongqing is a picturesque city with
rivers crisscrossing through mountains. The city has unique weather
conditions with little frost and snow, more cloud and mist, and plenty of
rainfall all year round. The average temperature is about 18ºC.

Chongqing's administrative area consists of the former city of Chongqing,
the cities of Wanxian and Fuling, and the Qianjiang Prefecture. The new city
of Chongqing covers a total area of 82,400 square kilometers and has a total
population of 30.5 million. |
Economic Development
Chongqing is, economically, the most important
city in southwestern China. The city has formed an economic structure
characterized by the co-existence of huge industrial and agricultural
sectors and a large communications industry. Chongqing generated a
1999 GDP of 120 billion RMB. The proportions of the primary, secondary and
tertiary industries, industry, agriculture, and communications, were 23%,
42%, and 35% respectively.
Agriculture Development
The unique geographical position, terrain, and
weather conditions of Chongqing have created favorable conditions for the
city to develop solid and ecologically based agriculture. The city's gross
agriculture output value has reached 23.5 billion RMB. Chongqing boasts a
number of leading agricultural industries including: grain; vegetables; lean
meat swine; cattle; sheep; rabbit; poultry; eggs; dairy; aquaculture;
fruits; mulberry; ramie; forestry and timber; and medicine.
Opening to the Outside World: Having a foreign trade port, national level
economic and technological development zones, and new technology development
zones, Chongqing is very open to overseas investment. The city was
authorized to directly manage the export trade from the State Council.
Chongqing has successfully
established economic and trade cooperation relations with more than 120
countries and regions all over the world. The overall economic structure of
the city is exceptionally open to overseas investment; thus far, over 2500
overseas-funded enterprises have been established. By the end of 1999
overseas funds totaling approximately 3 billion US dollars had been invested
into the city.
Touristism The city of Chongqing
boasts the world-renowned scenic site, the picturesque Three Gorges with its
beautiful natural
landscapes

numerous ancient cultural relics. Chongqing has more than 20
tourist sites, more than 300 scenic spots, and more than 10 major historical
and cultural sites under State protection.
The city is flanked by the Yangtze River and the Jialingjiang River, with
their green hills and clear waters. The spectacular landscapes showcase the
natural beauty of the city.
