ANHUI - Hefei (Capital of the Anhui Province): Hefei is located between the Yangtze and Huaihe rivers, on the north bank of Lake Chaohu. It covers 7,266 square kilometers, including 458 square kilometers of urban area. The city administers three counties and four districts with a total population of 4.5 million, including 1.2 million urban residents.

Economic Achievements: Hefei's GDP totaled 22.5 billion yuan in 1999 with its primary, secondary and tertiary industries accounting for 17.5%, 47% and 35.5%, respectively. Its industrial economy has grown rapidly, forming the city's industrial pillars of light industry, household electric appliances, machinery, metallurgy, chemicals, and building materials.

Opening to the Outside World: Hefei has opened itself wider to overseas investment and actively tried to cultivate new economic growth points. The city has approved over 1,200 foreign-funded enterprises which have invested a total of 4.5 billion US dollars, including 1.5 billion US dollars of contracted investment. Development zones have become favorable places for foreign investment. The Hefei High-tech Industrial Development Zone has a designated area of 18.5 square kilometers, which is home to 442 enterprises. In recent years, these enterprises have obtained good results with a total annual income of 4.5 billion yuan from technology, industry, and trade.

Other Cities Opening to the Outside World: Other major cities in the province such as Huaibei, Wuhu, Bengbu, Anging, and Chuzhou are also opening to overseas investment. In addition to the nation's provincial preferential policy, the cities have also set up a comprehensive service system involving industrial and commercial administration, taxation, finance, insurance, electric power and water supply, as well as post and telecommunications, in order to provide sound, efficient, quality service for both domestic and overseas investors.
The province of Anhui, located in the heart of China, reaches south to the Yangtze River. The average temperature is 4ºC in January and 29ºC in July. Most major cities in the province enjoy plenty of sunshine and sufficient rainfall. Its major products are farming, forestry, animal husbandry, sideline produce, and fishery and its major industries, machinery, textiles, light industry, electronics, metallurgy, paper products, ship-building, construction materials, and fine chemicals.
Wuhu City is the fifth largest port on the Yangtze River and is the an excellent deep-water inland river port located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, one of the three largest inland rivers in China.
