ZHUANG AUT. REG. - Nanning (Capital of Guanxi Zhuang Autonomous
Region) Nanning is the capital city of the
Guangxi Autonomous Region and also the center of passage through
China's southwest. With a total area of 10,029 square kilometers, a
total population of 2.779 million (including 1.35 million urban
residents), the city is located in the sub-tropical monsoon zone with
plenty of sunshine and rain and an average temperature of 22
centigrade.
Rich in mineral resources and agriculture
products Nanning has an abundant supply of
rice, corn, peanuts, sesame, green soy beans, black soy beans,
cassava, bamboo, silk, tea, mushrooms, dry ginger, anise, and so on.
It also enjoys good harvests in over 40 fruits, particularly those
that grow well in sub-tropical zones, such as bananas, pears, apples,
oranges, lichis, longnians, and watermelons. There are also more than
50 kinds of Chinese herbal resources, such as hajie, luohanguo, sharen,
huaishan, banxia, and fulin, and its forested areas cover 2.6 million
hectares. The city boast more than 20 types of minerals, including
coal, iron, manganese, bronze, zinc, cobalt, gold, aluminum,
phosphorus, heavy spar, and quartz arenaceous.
Transportation and Opening to the Outside World
Nanning is the most convenient transportation centre of southeastern
China. It has a transport network consisting of railways, highways,
and river ways. It is connected with international airlines, with 20
direct lines to cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu,
Kunming, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Hong Kong.
Economic Development Zones and Opening to the
Outside World Recently, Nanning has started
to actively exploit both the domestic and international markets,
strengthening the dynamics of investments, accelerating the pace of
upgrading the city to meet international standards, and developing
economic exchanges and foreign trades. The export and import values
total approximately US$750 million. Nanning's new and advanced
technology development zone fulfilled a total profit of 950 million
yuan in the technological, industrial, and trade areas. The Nanning
economic development zone has welcomed more than 75 projects with
investments of over 1.5 billion yuan. Of the 75 projects, twenty seven
have been put into operation. The Dashatian development zone has had
17 projects approved. Overall, the Nanning investment zone for
overseas Chinese has realized a total output value of 5.5 hundred
million yuan.
Other major cities of the Guangxi Autonomous
Region Liuzhou, Guilin, Beihai are some of
the other major cities in the Guangxi Autonomous Region. Liuzhou,
located in the central part of the Guangxi Autonomous Region, has a
total area of 5,283 square kilometers and a population of 1.75
million. Liuzhou and its surrounding counties are of rolling hills,
densely covered with forest. The city is rich in tourism resources,
with its many well-known scenic spots and historical sites, beautiful
caves and picturesque stones, green hills and clear waters. It is a
historical and cultural city as well as one of the first-rate tourist
cities in China. The Liuzhou New and High-Tech Industry Development
Zone is located in the eastern part of the city, fifteen kilometers
away from the Liuzhou Bailian Airport, covering an area of 13.5 square
kilometers. It has amassed more than 180 large and middle-sized
enterprises - some of which include the automotive, engineering,
mechanical, electronic, metallic, light, textile, and chemicals
industries - and has acquired advanced equipment and technologies. It
is known for its rapid developments and its profitability.
Guilin is situated in the northeastern part of Guangxi Autonomous
Region. Its territory spans over 4,195 square kilometers, with a
population of 1.3 million. Guilin is a tourist and historical city of
cultural importance. There are 109 culturally important sites under
the protection of state, regional and city authorities. Tourism in
Guilin is growing very fast. At present, there are 32 hotels that
receive foreign guests, 29 of which are star-rated. There are more
than 5,840 hotel rooms to accommodate the tourists. In addition, there
are 69 travel agencies, 110 tourist boats, and so on. Guilin has
become a tourist hot spot to both domestic and foreign visitors. The
Guilin High and New Technological Development Zone is located in the
eastern part of the city, with an area of 22 square kilometers, on
which the integration of scientific, industrial, agricultural, and
trade fields takes place. There are more than 640 foreign and
domestic-invested enterprises currently under operation. The Guilin
Westcity Economic Development Zone, located in western suburb with an
area of 16 square kilometers, is the base of Taiwanese investors. The
Guilin Northcity Economic Development Zone, located in the northern
suburb of the city and with an area of 16 square kilometers, is
designed for warehousing and storage purposes, as well as the
processing industries. The Guilin Taohuajiang Tourist Tourist and
Holiday Resort is located on the Taohuajiang River, centered around
the Ludi Rock. It is built to be a grand multi-functional and
multi-level holiday and tourist resort. Beihai. situated on the
southern tip of the Guangxi Autonomous Region and the northeastern
bank of the Beibu Bay, with total area of 957 square kilometers and a
population of 1.354 million, is another touristy spot. Some of the
major tourist sites in Beihai include Yintan Beach, Weizhou Island
(also known as a "fairyland on the sea"), Xieyang Island, Xinghu
Island, and the Guantou Mountain. The city is rich in aquatic products
(one of the largest in southern China), with the average annual
production totaling more than 500,000 tons. Beihai City has used its
preferential policies to attract foreign investments and exporters.
The city so far has approved more than 1,500 foreign-funded projects,
with agreed investments of over 5.5 billion US dollars. |
