Guiyang (Capital of Guizhou Province): The
city of Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou Province, is located in the
centre of the province in the middle of the eastern slope of the
Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Guiyang has a total area of 8,084 square
kilometers, including 86 square kilometers of urban areas. Guiyang
features an undulating topography, with high mountains and plateaus
from north to south, hills and river valleys in the centre, and an
average altitude of 1,250 meters. The city has a population of 3.25
million, including 1.45 million urban residents. The average
population density is 390 persons per square kilometer.
Land and Mineral Resources:
Guiyang has a large mountainous area and a small basin area. The
average farm's acreage is 0.064 hectares. Guiyang is classified as a
sub-tropical, evergreen broadleaf forest area, with forests and bush
coverage exceeding 20%. There are 2,400 species of wild plants, 800
species of plants under cultivation, and 200 species of wildlife.
Guiyang has 19 types of minerals including bauxite, coal, limestone,
dolomite, sandstone, clay, oil shale, and crystal. There are 122
mineral deposits, including one diamond deposit, that have been
surveyed and assessed. Coal reserves have been verified at 89.636
million tons, bauxite, at 34.795 million tons, sandstone and clay for
cement making, at 23.35 million tons, and marble, at 90.219 million
tons. The Nanming River and the Baihua Lake on the Maotiao River have
a combined capacity of over 200 million cubic meters of water. The
city's hydropower potential is estimated at 79,730 kilowatts.
Seventy-six hydroelectric power stations are to be built, with a
combined generating capacity of 27,923 kilowatts.
Many Tourism Resources:
Well-known for their magnificent and picturesque scenes are Hongfeng
Lake, Baihua Lake, Jinhua Lake, Qianling Lake. Qianling Park, Nanjiao
Park, and Forest Park feature many exotic areas of great beauty and
tranquility. Guiyang boasts the Tianhetan Tourism Zone and the ancient
historical and cultural town of Qiangyan. The famous tourist sites
include the Jiaxiu Building, the ancient Wenchang Pavilion, the
Laixian Pavilion, the Hongfu and Yangming Temples, Cuiwei Garden, and
the Xianren Cave. Guizhou has received more than 24.5 million US
dollars from 75,000 overseas tourists and 472 million Chinese yuan
from hundreds of millions of domestic visitors.
Sustained Industries and Agriculture Development:
Guiyang is continuing its efforts to strengthen the farming sector as
the foundation of its economy. The combined annual output value of
agriculture, forestry, livestock breeding, and fisheries averages 3.5
billion Chinese yuan. Over 548,000 tons of grain, 495,000 tons of
vegetables, and 30,000 tons of flue-cured tobacco are produced
annually. Production of foodstuffs such as meat, eggs, milk, and
aquatic products is increasing. Guiyang's GDP value totaled 17.25
billion Chinese yuan; the city's primary, secondary and tertiary
industries accounted for 11.78%, 52.56%, and 35.66% of the GDP,
respectively. The major manufactured goods include raw coal, cement,
cigarettes, aluminum, electricity, and tires. Guiyang currently has
61,300 enterprises, including 102 large and medium-sized enterprises
and 161 construction enterprises. Guiyang has achieved much success in
reforms, opening up, and the modernization drive, thus laying a solid
foundation for implementation of China's policy to enter the WTO in
the near future.
The city of Tsun-I:
located in the northern part of the province, is the second largest
industrial city in the province. Its main industries are textiles,
metallurgy, mechanics, and oil drilling. Tsun-I produces all the
phosphorous fertilizer for all farming through the province. |
