| HAINAN -
Haikou (Capital of Hainan Province): Next to
Taiwan, Hainan is the second largest island province of China, located
on the South China Sea. Haikou is the capital of Hainan and is located
on the northern coastline, with its northern part adjacent to the
Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. Hainan has a total population of 7.25
million, a total area of 34,500 square kilometers (including a main
island area of 33,950 square kilometers), and approximately 1,500
kilometers of coastline around the island.
Nature Resources and General Information:
Haikou City is a famous fishing harbor in China. Haikou is a city
under develpment, with a great variety of industries, particularly in
the processing of agriculture products (coconut, sugar cane, cocoa,
coffee, rubber, walnut, pineapple, palm oil, tea, and grain). Its rich
natural resources -- off-shore petroleum, natural gas, yttrium iron
ores, lead clays, zinc, glass sand, and sea salt - are waiting to be
explored.
Economic and Industrial Development:
The Haikou City government has made great adjustments in the city's
economic structure, with more emphasis on the development of industry.
The changes have contributed to a stable economic growth, and
difficulties of some poor-performance enterprises have been resolved.
Relying upon the new technologies, the improvement and introduction of
new products, the tax-free industrial development zone has attracted a
number of new industrial projects (including the Jinpan industrial
development zone), its speed of development increasing along with its
potential capacity. Recently, according to governmental statistics,
the total domestic output value was reported to have reached 10.25
billion Chinese yuan, the total industrial output value to have
reached 8.5 billion Chinese yuan, and the total retail sales value to
have reached 6.5 billion Chinese yuan.
Further Opening to the Outside World:
Due to the strict monetary policy in macroeconomics and the shortage
of finds, the introduction of foreign investment in Haikou City has
become an important resource in its own economic reforms and its
introduction to the outside world. With proper adjustments in land
prices, the adoption of the amortization loans, and other tax and fee
preferential treatment, a number of new projects has been introduced
with the further improvements in foreign exchange and cooperation. Two
hundred new foreign-invested enterprises have been set up in the city,
with actual investments valued at over 650 million US dollars. With
the improvement in the investment structure, the nature of the
investments has been changed from real estate and consumption goods to
infrastructures and productive projects, from dispersed short-term
projects to large backbone ones.
Sanya City is a state-level tourist site in the province.
