HEBEI - Shijiazhuang (Capital of the Heibei Province): Shijiazhuang is situated in the mid-southern part of the Heibei Province in northern China. The city covers a total of 15,848 square kilometers and a population of 8.45 million, of which 1.53 million are urban. With a communication network that extends to all directions, Shijiazhuang has become a major commercial hub in northern China. Economic Development & Development Zones: As one of the major grain and cotton producers in China, Shijiazhuang boasts a successful agricultural industry, whose main products include wheat, maize, cotton, and other vegetation. The output of meat, egg, and milk products is also high. In recent years, the city has endeavored to develop its tertiary industries with the aim of establishing a commercial hub connecting northern China, northeastern China, and northwestern China. The city's annual sales of consumer goods have averaged 21.5 billion yuan in recent years. An economic and technological development zone and a new technological industry development zone has been accomplished or is under construction. So far, the number of enterprises entering these two development zones has reached 930, with a total of 11.5 billion yuan in project investment funds. Opening to the Outside World: Shijiazhuang has been opening more and more to the outside world. In 1999, the city has a total of US$1.5 billion in overseas investments, and 1,500 foreign-funded enterprises, Sino-foreign joint ventures, Sino-foreign cooperative ventures, and wholly foreign-owned ventures. Other Cities in the Province: The province's major cities -- Tangshan, Chengde, Qinhuangdao, Langfang, Wu'an, and Bazhou -- are continuously opening themselves to the outside world and actively soliciting overseas investors. Tangshan is rich in natural resources, and has a large variety (47 kinds) of high quality minerals, including coal (4.5 billion tons), petroleum (900 million), natural gas (70 billion cubic meters), and gold (70 tons). There is also a considerable amount of silver deposits, manganese, chromium, lead, mica, and phosphorus. Chengde and Qinhuangdao -- famous for its tourist resorts -- are located in northeastern part of the province, with links Shanhaiguan and Beidaihe. Qinhuangdao, Shanhaiguan, and Beidaihe are economic and technological development zones, whereas Nandaihe is a new and advanced technological industry garden that is being set up. A total of 500 foreign-funded enterprises are operating in the Qinhuangdao and a number of 250 foreign-funded enterprises have been established in Chengde city. Langfang's geographical position is situated in the middle of Beijing and Tianjin. It has developed a sound investment policy climate, featuring flexible taxation policies and low investment costs. As well, the price of land in Langfang is only one third of that in Beijing, making it a welcome locale for more than of 500 foreign-funded enterprises, with total foreign investments reaching US$1.5 billion. Wu'an and Bazhou are both rapidly-developing cities. The new Bazhou Business Plaza is multifunctional and modern, consisiting of a variety of businesses, markets, wholesalers and retailers, tourism services, and so on.
