MONGOLIA AUT. REG. - Huhhot (Capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous
Region.) Huhhot is located in the central
part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and to the south of the
Daqing Mountain. Huhhot has been the economic and cultural bridge
between the Hans and the national minorities in northern China. The
old city was built in the Ming Dynasty and the new one was built in
the northeast by the Qing Dynasty. There are many lamaseries in Huhhot,
including the famous Dazhao, Xilituzhao, and Wusutuzhao. Other
historic sites include the Jingangbaozuo Pagoda, the Great Mosque, the
relics of General's Office, the Tomb of Wang Zhaojun, the Wanbu
Huayanjing Buddhist Pagoda, and the Princess Mansion of the Qing
Dynasty. It has a total urban area of 75.4 square kilometers, and an
urban population of 666,000. Its main resources include coal,
graphite, marble stones, bentonite, kaolin, gold, lead, zinc, fur,
meat, milk, and medicine.
Economic Development and Industrial Development
Zones In recent years, the city's GDP has
reached 13.5 billion Chinese yuan, with the primary, secondary and
tertiary industries accounting for 18.5%, 41.9%, and 39.6% of the
total number, respectively. The main sector of the city is industrial,
with the chemical, textile, building material, food, electronic, and
engineering industries as the backbones. The city now has two
development zones: the Ruyi economic and technological development
zone and the Jinchuaan resources economic development zone. More than
500 "three formed ventures" - Sino-foreign joint ventures,
Sino-foreign co-operative ventures, and wholly foreign owned
enterprises - have been approved by the city and over US$50 million
have been committed in foreign investments. It mainly focuses on those
industries as clothing, textile products, non-metal minerals, service,
electronics, telecommunications, machine-metal processing, and fur.
Convenient Transportation and Opening up to the
Outside World The city's total length of
road reaches 2,500 kilometers, the capacity of freight transport
reache 26 million tons, and the city has developed 20 domestic and
international flight routes. It offers direct flights to Beijing,
Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. In recent years, the
city has continued to open itself to the outside world, attracting
foreign investments, and expanding the scale and diversity of such
investments.
Baotou City and Chifeng City Economy Environment
Baotou City and Chifeng City are two of the most important cities in
the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Baotou is a large industrial
city and is situated in the western part of the Inner Mongolia
Autonomous Region. It covers a total area of 27,691 square kilometers,
including 133 square kilometers of urban area and a population of 1.3
million. Baotou is rich in natural resources, with 2,154 hectares of
grassland, 303 hectares of cultivated land, 32 hectares of forests, an
iron ore deposit of 1.3 billion tons, a coal deposit 649 million tons,
a rare metals deposit of 88.7719 million tons, a rare earth deposit of
87 million tons, a niobium deposit of 2.5 million tons, a gold deposit
of 32.95 tons, and a non-metal mineral deposit of 181.25 million tons.
Baotou boasts 36 major industries, with those of metallurgy,
mechanical and electrical equipment, chemistry, textiles, rare earth
and electric power as the pillar industries. The Baotou Rare Earth
High and New Technology Industry Development Zone was established in
1990, approved by the State Council as the only one among the 52 other
such areas characterized with the production of rare earth. A
scientific-technological development service centre has also been
built in the city and put into operation. More than 250 "three formed
ventures" - Sino-foreign joint ventures, Sino-foreign co-operative
ventures, and wholly foreign owned enterprises - were approved and put
into operation in the city. There are more than 100 enterprises set up
in Baotou development zone, making it a hot spot for overseas
investment and also a new point of economic growth in the Inner
Mongolia Autonomous Region. Chifeng, situated in central eastern part
of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, covers more than 90,000
square kilometers with a combined population of 4.42 million. Chifeng
is rich in natural resources, spanning over 995,000 hectares of
cultivated areas, 5.73 million hectares of grassland, 1.5 million
hectares of barren mountains and deserts, and 4.2 billion cubic meters
of water resources. Farm and animal husbandry have become Chifeng's
main industry. The city is home to more than 70 underground minerals -
gold, silver, non-ferrous metals, coal, iron, crude oil, limestone,
and marble, all of which are high-grade and enjoy large reserves.
Chifeng is a treasure trove ready to be discovered. It has huge
