JIANGSU - Nanjing (Capital of the Jiangsu Province): Nanjing serves as a link between the vast Jianghuai Plain in the north and the rich Yangtze River Delta in the east, located at the eastern part of China. The city covers 6,516 square kilometers and has a total population of 5.35 million. Nanjing, a historical and cultural city, is one of China's best-known scenic spots. The Yangtze River flows 95 kilometers through the city, and has a wide surface area capable of accommodating 10,000 tonnage-level ships. Nanjing is humid and belongs to a subtropical climate, with its annual average temperature being approximately 16C. Nanjing is rich in natural resources and harvests more than 40 minerals.

Transportation and Telecommunication: Nanjing is a transportation and telecommunication hub in eastern China and has a transportation in air, railway, highway, and water. It has the newly-built Nanjing-Shanghai expressway, as well as highways connecting Nanjing and Lianyungang, Nanjing and Nantong, Nanjing and Yancheng, Nanjing and Heifei, and Nanjing and Hangzhou. The newly-built Lukou International Airport has been opened to service international passengers. With a cargo handling capacity of 55 million tons, the Nanjing port is the largest inland river port in China. Nanjing's urban telephone exchange capacity reaches 1.2537 million lines.

Rapid Economic Development: Nanjing's major industries range from iron and steel, automobiles, oil refineries, cement, chemicals, machine tools, electronics, petro-chemicals, biological pharmaceutical engineering, and electronic information. The city has nine development zones at and above the provincial level. In 1999, the city has a total of 2,390 foreign-funded enterprises in production, generating an annual output of approximately 28.5 billion yuan. The city's import and export volume amounted to US$4.5 billion. Nanjing has a total of 550 different consumer markets whose combined sales volume reaches 31.5 billion yuan. Nanjing has become a developed city and has entered the state-central wholesales market successfully.

Economic Development of Other Cities in Jaingsu Province: In Jiangsu Province, other cities -- Nantong, Zhangjiagang, and Suzhou -- are opening themselves to the outside world in order to attract foreign investors. Those cities' economic and technology development zones and were operating with success. As well, Suzhou city has carried out the strategy of "vitalizing the city with science and education" to pave the way for its own economic development. The city has been chosen as one of China's top 100 counties that are listed as advanced in science, technology, and elementary education.
