LIAONING - Shenyang (Capital of the Liaoning Province): The city of Shenyang is located in central Liaoning, in the northeastern part of China. Shenyang has a total area of 12,980 square kilometers and a population of 6.75 million people. Connected by highway to many economically important developing cities including Tielin (the city of coal and grains), Fushun (city of coal), Anshan (city of steel), Benxi (city of coal and iron), Liaoyang (city of chemical fabric), Panjing (city of petro-chemicals), and Yinkou (a harbor city), Shenyang is part of an economic zone in central Liaoning Province. Sustained Urban Economic Development: Shenyang is the nation's foremost manufacturer of machinery equipment, metal cutting machine tools, heavy mining equipment, cars, and electronic transforming systems. As well, they produce a great amount of medicine. In recent years, the city's GDP has averaged 82 billion yuan. Shenyang is the largest exchange center of capital - both foreign and domestic- information, and human resources in northeast China. Transportation and Communication: Shenyang Taoyang Airport, the largest in the northeastern region of China and a state approved international airport, has opened more than 40 international and domestic routes which fly directly to North Korea, Russia, Japan, and South Korea. Six rail arteries link Shenyang with cities in all directions, with direct rail linkage with Mongolia, North Korea, and Russia. Five national highways and six provincial highways create a network that connects to national and provincial arteries as well as counties and townships. The Shenyang-Dalian expressway travels 375 kilometers. Achievements in Opening to Foreign Investors: Shenyang has attracted a great number of foreign projects and its foreign-invested ventures have grown to more than 4500 enterprises by the end of 1999. Shenyang has two state level development zones, the Shenyang Economic and Technological Development Zone, and the Shenyang High and New Technological Industrial Development Zone, which have successfully introduced over 700 projects to 32 foreign countries and regions. Other Cities' Economic Development: Anshan, Benxi, Jinzhou, Huludao, Yinkou, Fuxin, Liaoyang, Panjin, Xingcheng and Dalian, are the major cities of Liaoning Province. These cities are rich in mineral resources; within Liaoning, 35 different minerals have been found. Iron ore reserves have been verified at 10 billion tons, magnesite, over 2.3 billion tons (accounting for one fourth of the world's total), talcum at 60 million tons, and high-quality, fine-grained, pure jade at 2.06 million tons. As well, marble, limestone, granite, lead, zinc, copper, gold, cobalt, silica, asbestos, fluorite, vermiculite, white mica, barite, boron, clay minerals, and petroleum are in abundant supply.Huludao and Dalian are harbor cities and are rich in fishery and industrial products. Both cities are state tourism locations and have beautiful landscapes and historic scenic spots. They are well known summer resorts in the northeastern China. Dalian is also a very busy commercial sea transportation harbor.
