Economic and Industries Development: The Xining region's annual GDP for 1999 was 576.078 million Chinese yuan; its primary industry accounted for 19.293 million yuan, its secondary industry, 266.305 million yuan, and its tertiary industry, 290.480 million yuan. Xining is a rapidly developing city. Its main industries are wool spinning and textiles, fur, meat, milk, salt, and light processing industries.

Golmud is the largest city in the Qinghai province and is located in a remote part of the Qingzang highlands. The city covers a total area of 135,400 square kilometers, including 72 square kilometers of urban area. Its population is 200,000. Mineral deposits are concentrated in and near the city, which is the chemical industry's primary source of raw materials in China. The Golmud Kunlun Economic Development Zone, which consists of an area of 28 square kilometers, was built in 1992.
