QINGHAI - Xining (Capital of Qinghai
Province) Xining, located in the
eastern part of the province, is the capital of Qinghai
Province. Today, as in the past, it is an important
transport and commercial pass between Tibet and China. The
city has an area of 350 square kilometers and a total
population of 695,000, including an urban population of
586,700.
Economic and Industries Development:
The Xining region's annual GDP for 1999 was 576.078
million Chinese yuan; its primary industry accounted for
19.293 million yuan, its secondary industry, 266.305
million yuan, and its tertiary industry, 290.480 million
yuan. Xining is a rapidly developing city. Its main
industries are wool spinning and textiles, fur, meat,
milk, salt, and light processing industries.
Golmud is
the largest city in the Qinghai province and is located in
a remote part of the Qingzang highlands. The city covers a
total area of 135,400 square kilometers, including 72
square kilometers of urban area. Its population is
200,000. Mineral deposits are concentrated in and near the
city, which is the chemical industry's primary source of
raw materials in China. The Golmud Kunlun Economic
Development Zone, which consists of an area of 28 square
kilometers, was built in 1992. Since then, 177 projects
have been introduced and 133 industrial and commercial
enterprises have been registered and are under operation. |
