SHANDONG - Jinan (Capital of Shandong Province): Jinan lies in the meeting belt of the hills in the central part and the plains in northwest Shandong, with the Yellow River to the north and Mount Tai to the south. Jinan has a total area of 8,154 square kilometers and a population of 5.44 million people, 1.9 million of which are urban residents. The city's an annual average temperature is approximately 14C. Minerals Resources and Economic Development: Jinan is rich in natural resources, with proven mineral deposits of coal, petroleum, natural gas, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, cobalt, refractory clay, and dolomites. The city has 150,000 hectares of forest land, 211 species of animals, and over 40 species of fish. Jinan's GDP reached 65 billion yuan in 1999, and the proportions of its primary, secondary, and tertiary industries are 14.5%, 48%, and 37.5% respectively. The pillar industries include the communication, transport equipment, electronics and electrical appliances, chemical raw materials, and other products. Its industries in textiles, lights, food processing, pharmaceuticals, and building materials are of a considerable scale and have grown sharply.. Economic Development Zone Opening to Outside World: By the end of 1999, the city's registered foreign-funded enterprises reached over 2300, with investments totaling over US$500 million and the export and import volume amounting to US$725 million. The Jinan Economic Development Zone has an area of 16 square kilometers, housing more than 220 new and high-tech enterprises and producing 304 varieties of hi-tech products. Its technology- and trade-related revenues in 1999 reached 8.5 billion yuan. Jinan encourages and welcomes overseas investors to make substantial investments in the city. Other Cities in the Shandong Province: Qingdao, Yantai, Rizhao, Xintai, and Jiaozhou are important commercial and industrial cities in the Shandong Province. Qingdao has a coastline of 730.64 kilometers with a beach area of 373 square kilometers and a total sea fishery reserve of 30,000 tons. The city's industrial products -- Qingdao Beer, Haier refrigerators, and Double Star shoes -- were awarded "the most renowned trademarks" both at home and abroad. Yantai has over 1200 foreign-funded enterprises. In the development zones, more than 250 foreign-funded enterprises have been put into production. Rizhao, Jiaozhou and Xintai have rapidly developing economies and three of the province's leading cities in opening themselves to the outside world.
