Natural Resources and Industries Development: Shanxi Province has always been known as a " Province of Coal", and Taiyuan City is just in the heart called " City of Coal". One-fifth, or 1,282 square kilometers of the city's total area has rich deposits of coal under it, with a known coal reserve of 18.5 billion tons. The coal of Taiyuan is of high quality and is the best in China. It can be used as a priority resource for turning energy into products. Besides coal, Taiyuan also has rich deposits of metal minerals, including iron, manganese, copper, aluminum and lead, and rich deposits non-metal minerals, such as gypsum, sulfur, marble and dolomite. The city is capable of providing many types of industrial resources, including iron, steel, copper, cement and chemical raw materials, which are manufactured on basis of primary and deep processing of minerals. The City's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has reached at a higher level to 35 Billion yuan in the year of 1999.

Major Industrial Developing in Taiyuan City: Taiyuan has formed its own pillar industries, including those of energy, metallurgy, mechanical and electrical equipment, chemistry and building materials. Major industrial products of Taiyuan include stainless steel, silicon steel, automobile steel, precision copper, tube bars, metallurgical equipment, mining machinery and equipment, heavy trucks, mining machinery equipment, large-size and drawn transformers, digit-controlled lathes, hydraulic elevator platforms, optical fiber surface boards, light vision instrument, serial products of vinegar for medicine, cosmetics and foods, products from deep processing of gypsum, special-shaped toughened glass and double-layered glass.

The City's Economic and Technological Development Zone and the High and New Technology Industry Development Zone: The Economic and Technological Development Zone covers a total area of 20 square kilometers. The two development zones boast a complete range of water supply, electric power, gas and heat supply facilities, and complete systems of support services, such as industry and commerce administration offices, customs offices, insurance firms and government offices for approving the establishment of overseas-funded projects. These systems of support services are capable of providing investors with whole range of services needed for the establishment of projects in the development zones, from the registration of the projects entering the development zones to the start of their operation. So far, the number of enterprises entering the two development zones has total 380, including 205 high and new technology industry enterprises. These enterprises have initially formed five pillar industries in the development zones - - the manufacture of micro - electronic telecommunications equipment, the manufacture of biopharmaceutical products, the production of new materials and the production of energy-saving and environment protection equipment. Part of the products of these industries have been designated by the State as key products for popularization.

Taiyuan City now is opening wider to the Outside World: In an effort to attract investment from both overseas Chinese and foreign businessmen of insight, Taiyuan has further improved its investment environment for opening to the outside world over recent years, on the basis of implementing the city's strategy of opening to overseas investment on a full range. Recent years, Taiyuan have approved hundreds of new overseas-funded ventures, Sino-foreign joint ventures, Sino-foreign cooperative ventures, and wholly foreign - owned ventures, with the total project investment reaching 3 billion U.S. dollars, the city region import and export value reaching 250 million US dollars in 1999.

Other Cities Economic Development in Shanxi Province: Datong, Yangquan and Changzhi are the most comprehensive industries and economic developing cities of opening cities to outside world of Shanxi Province.
