UYGUR AUT. REG. - Urumqi (Capital of Xijiang Uygur Autonomous Region)
Urumqi is the capital of the Xijiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located
at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountain and the southern rim of
the Junngar Basin, with elevations between 680 and 920 meters. It
covers a total area of 12,000 square kilometers, including 82 square
kilometers of urban area, and a total population of 1.48 million. The
city's rural population accounts for only 13% of the total.
Natural Resources and Economic Development
Urumqi is rich in natural resources, with the coal reserve topping
over 10 billion tons. It is also rich in oil reserves, boasting the
East Junggar Oil Field in the north, the Kramay Oil Field in the west,
the Turpan-Hami Oil Field in the east, and the Tarim Oil Field in the
south. The city has picturesque sights and unique cultural spots,
attracting both domestic and international tourists. The city has
540,000 hectares of arable land, 600,000 hectares of pastures, more
than 300 varieties of wild plants, and 3,600 hectares of water surface
for the breeding sector. The average per capita net income for workers
and farmers in the city is around 8,500 yuan and 5,000 yuan per year,
respectively.
Industrial and Investment Environments
Urumqi is a newly-rising industrial city, with its base in the
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Its industries comprise mainly of
petroleum processing, metallurgy, chemicals, textiles, machinery,
electronics, building materials, paper-making, canned foods, and so
on. The city's industrial output value totals 20.5 billion yuan, and
has developed over 150 famous brand-name products, many of which have
been awareded prizes both on the State level and the local
governmental level.
Urumqi Economic and Technological Development
Zone and Urumqi New and High-Tech Development Zone
A total of more than 300 enterprises have been set up in the Urumqi
Economic and Technological Development Zone, which covers an area of
2.5 square kilometers and drew investments totalling over 2.25 billion
yuan. A total of 510 enterprises have been set up in the Urumqi New
and High-Tech Development Zone, with cumulated technological,
industrial, and trade incomes totaling over 800 million yuan. These
development zones have established effective economic links with both
the West and East. The city has so far approved over 400
foreign-funded enterprises with total overseas investments surpassing
250 million US dollars.
Other Cities Economic Development of the Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region Both the city of
Shihezi and the city of Changji are both opening themselves to the
outside world. The Shihezi Economic and Technological Development Zone
has an area of 16 square kilometers, with 5.3 square kilometers of
land already utilized in phase one of the development. The development
zone is located in the eastern parts of the city, some 4 kilometers
away from Shihezi downtown area. The newly completed Xinjiang Airport
is located 2 kilometers away from the northeastern part of the
development zone. At this time, more than 200 enterprises have been
set up in the zone, including manufacturing and commercial trading
companies and more than 30 foreign-funded enterprises, with investment
totalling 850 million Chinese yuan. The city of Changji is rich in
minerals and other resources, as well as other agriculture products.
Its mineral reserves include gold, silver, coal, iron, and copper. In
addition, the city has abundant forestry resources, as well as wild
animal and plant resources. Melon seeds of Changzi are in great demand
both at home and abroad, and at one time Changzi was awarded the "Cup
of Golden Melon" prize. The city is an agricultural miracle,
increasing harvest gains and achieving rapid development in successive
